One of the most important truths of the Bible has been challenged and nearly exterminated by the errors of the past and especially by the very first lie of the Bible, told by Satan to Eve: "Thou shalt not surely die" Gen. 3:4. The Nature of Man and his relationship to death is one of immense importance to Christians. This is because when a false view of death is believed, many other errors have been developed over the centuries to fit the false theology and enhance the power of the Papacy.
Grave and Hell are often found to be the same word in the Bible, because that is the location of the dead upon cessation of life. The false theory of an Immortal Soul, has come to us from Pagan Greek philosophy and has been propagated into one of the most horrible agencies of Satan to malign and destroy the pure, loving character of our wonderful God. Errors such as purgatory, infant baptism and the like.
Death is the opposite of life, which was given to man in the garden of Eden. Gen. 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
When a person breathes out their last breath, the body returns to the ground from which it was originally created and the breath of life (Spirit) returns to God who gave it. In Job 27:3 the breath of life is referred to as Spirit.
There are some "big names" on the side of the Non-immortality of the soul:
Lutheran: Oscar Cullmann - "Immortality of the Soul or Resurrection of the Dead?"
Baptist: Clark Pinnock - "Fire Then Nothing"
Plymouth Brethren: Edward W. Fudge - "The Fire that Consumes" Foreword by F.F. Bruce
Evangelical: John R. W. Stott - Evangelicals Essentials. A Liberal-Evangelical Dialogue.
"…we need to survey the biblical material afresh and to open our minds (not just our hearts) to the possibility that Scripture points in the direction of annihilation, and that 'eternal conscious torment' is a tradition which has to yield to the supreme authority of Scripture." Stott. Evangelical Essentials;: p. 315.
Two other important truths developed at Creation are under tremendous attack by Satan. The first is Marriage which was instituted by God Himself when He made Eve of Adam's rib and gave Her to Him to be his helpmate or spouse. Unfortunately marriage is seen as nearly unnecessary and a burden to the young people of today. God established the institution of Marriage to bring harmony and powerful family values into society which form the most significant building block of a solid and secure nation.
The second institution which has been under attack from Satan and the Papacy is the Seventh Day Sabbath of Creation. The Sabbath "rest" of creation was made for man, long before there was a descendant of Abraham on the earth. It has continued unabated and unaltered since creation, and will be kept in Heaven and on the recreated New Earth on into eternity ( Isa. 66). If mankind had never forgotten the very commandment God said to remember, there would never have been an infidel or atheist in the world community, for every Sabbath God's children would have come to worship Him, the Creator. Notice Ex. 20:8-11
"8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Did you notice that the Sabbath is "of the Lord thy God". What a blessing it is to follow God's will and show forth the fruit of being saved "by Grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone."
